View Full Version : MikeL's ESi

My 1995 Talon ESi I bought a little over two months ago. No mods at the moment. I spent a bit of money just getting it back into shape, so it won't have any mods until Spring probably.

Comments about the direction I should go with my engine bay would be welcome.

I'm not really sure. I think it was like that when I bought it. Though I'm not used to having a car so low to the ground, because I used to drive a truck, so I may have accidentally hit a few curbs when parking. :p

I didn't paint it. The previous previous owner painted it two years ago, or that's what I was told. Most of those pictures are just after I spent 3 or 4 hours washing, buffing and waxing it.

Thanks guys. Though the paint looks good, it's starting to peel in some places, which is getting annoying. Hopefully when it gets warmer, I can just rattle can and buff it.

I actually like that the engine bay is red. With a few more red ascents (plug wires, strut bar), it could actually look really nice.

Right now I'm either saving up for correct size tires (215/40 currently and I need 215/45 or 225/45), or buying new wheels completely. I can't really decide yet. If I get new wheels, then I won't be able to lower it any time soon. Also, is it possible at all to get aftermarket exhaust for the 420a that doesn't sound ricey?

kandyinmyvan
02-04-2009, 12:44 AM
Are your foglights painted over? I would just lower it and stop the mods there. Keep it a clean DD.

MikeL
02-04-2009, 12:52 AM
Lowering it is the only major mod I have in mind. If I got the wheels, then I could take them off if I ever sold this and use them for my next car.

The fogs are actually just little plastic pieces bolted to where the lights would go. They look factory, but I've never seen another Talon that has that, so iunno. I think my car looks better without fogs.

kandyinmyvan
02-04-2009, 01:04 AM
Yea the fogs actually look really good. I don't think they're factory. Makes me think that fogs would look good nightshaded.

MikeL
02-04-2009, 01:17 AM
Rob's old ESi had those same plastic inserts too apparently.

Tinting the fogs could look pretty good, but don't blame me if they turn out bad, lol.

I think that's just the angle. I dunno though. The strut bar is really easy to get off, you just unscrew the bolts on the end, and only the metal bar needs to come off. But you do need to take it off to change the spark plugs.

Speaking of which... we replaced the spark plugs last night. Did three of them and got to the very end and found oil all over the plug, which means it probably wasn't firing. Weird. So we put the new ones in and test drove it and it ran good, then checked the plug when we got home and no oil, so I think it's fine now.

You more than likely weren't missing. There is probably a gasket around your spark plugs that is leaking. It doesn't get down into the combustion chamber, but if it fills up enough, it may cause a misfire from making contact with the ignition wire. Give it time and you will find more oil in there.

And don't do exhaust. Neonz sound gay.

Doubtful. It is most likely what Bryan was saying. A headgasket would be causing more problems than that, plus I dont think that Neon has enough power to lift the head.

MikeL
05-06-2009, 11:17 PM
The car had a head gasket leak (or blown) at one time, which is I think why the engine was rebuilt.

Also, I was just thinking of going with a stock GST exhaust since it won't sound ricey and is larger diameter than my current stock exhaust.

What's wrong with it?

I think the crankshaft angle sensor is messed up. Car runs for about 5-15 minutes then dies. Won't start without cooling off for 5 minutes but then dies again soon after. We replaced the sensor with an Advanced Auto BWD one and it worked for 2 days but then it started acting up again. So now we're getting an OEM one from a DSM parts guy on Ebay.

Yeah, you need to cut out all the old rust, then have a new piece of metal bent into shape and welded in.

I just did a little photoshop of my car and it looks pretty good tinted so that will be added to my list. I just don't have the money to get it done right now. Gotta re-save up for school since i just spent all the money I had saved up. :banghead

Whenever you look around to tint shops or independent guys (my recommendation), don't pay over $170. Generally, $160 is a good deal and $170 is fair. Plus, get the same tint all the way around. I hate the way cars look with like 5% in the rears and anything else up front. Your car would look SEX with 20% all the way around.

MikeL
07-06-2009, 04:18 PM
I can get a deal for $150 whenever i want it. My dad won't get me get anything more than legal on the front windows and I don't think I want to go 35% all the way around or whatever legal is. I'll have to see if I can do some persuasion.

95TalonTSI

35% is the legal limit on the front 2, I am not sure if or what the back legal limit. If there is, then it is like 2% On my 3000gt I had 5% and that was plenty dark.

Legal limit is 35% on the front, and 2% on the back. I had 2% on my integra and it was super dark. 5% on my eclipse and it is quite enjoyable. Im going to be getting 25% on the fronts most likely.

It's also kind of funny really. We spend all this money on mods and things to make the car look better and go faster, but I have to say that a maintenance repair is one of the best things I have done to my car yet.

All you need is the muffler welded on. A shop will probably do that for a pretty decent price. I'd talk to Bryan or Travis and have them see how much their shops would charge.

Also, maintenance before mods sir. That is how DSMs survive.

The car is loud. It's not 4" exhaust loud, but it's louder than I hoped it would be for just replacing the muffler. I still can't decide if I like it or not. My other option would be to go with a GST muffler and then get a testpipe, which would put me about where I want it, I think.

But it does sound pretty good. Tomorrow if the weather is better, I'll go out and wash my car and then take some videos.

So, you just have the muffler on there right now? The GS-T muffler coupled with a test pipe will be considerably louder than what you have now.

I don't really know about that. I'd wait until you hear it to decide. The GST muffler alone shouldn't make much car much louder than stock.

MikeL
07-14-2009, 01:16 AM
Kinda pissed right now. I've realized the muffler sounds like shit lol and the piping that the shop who welded it did looks really restricted from the way they bent it.

And now car has trouble starting, revs to about 500 rpm then tries to die unless I give it gas to get it idling fine. Now as I'm driving it, I press in the clutch to shift, and the RPM's drop a little faster than normal, but they don't stop going down, until the engine stalls. As long as I shift and let the clutch out it won't die, but when shifting into neutral it will die when rolling up to stop lights and such.

Hmm. Could the new muffler / restricted exhaust cause this or would it be something else, like the TPS?

I like the way you have gone about upgrading this thing. The car looks nice and not a bad choice on wheels or suspension for a budget. I just cannot get over the red engine bay and the random chips that expose red out the outside. It would bother the hell out of me :/

Kinda pissed right now. I've realized the muffler sounds like shit lol and the piping that the shop who welded it did looks really restricted from the way they bent it.

This was happening to me a little while ago. Get a voltage meter and test the battery to see if it is holding charge. If so, turn the car on and test it again, to see if the alternator is working. If it is, it should be reading close to 14v. If neither of those work, try changing out your battery terminals. That is what did it for me.

My 3000gt would do that once I did a drop in filter mod. Came to find out it created a vacuum leak.

Looks good. I miss my non turbo Eagle Talon sometimes. But I did build it and then turbo'd it. If you plan on turboing it go with Hahnrace craft stage 2. Easy to install and is fun as heck to drive.

My idle has always been a little rough, so there could be a possibility of a vacuum leak but I don't know.

My car started up just fine today, but when I rev it a little in neutral, it makes a small popping and puttering sound when I let off. Does that sound like an exhaust restriction or maybe the cat needs replacing?

Sounds like any other aftermarket exhaust on a car. Have you heard Cory's skittle when he lets off the gas?!?!

That's actually what I thought when I first heard it, lol. But my car isn't turbo and isn't making nearly as much power as his, so I dunno. Just doesn't seem right.

All cars do it. My old integra with stock pea shooter exhaust piping and a fart can did it.

Oh. Well my car is running fine now for some reason. The exhaust is growing on me, and it really doesn't seem that loud anymore. I still think I'm going to put on a GST muffler though, when I find one.

Here's some pics in the meantime.

Dude, this car and what you have done to it has to be the least rice I've ever seen on an N/T. I love your car and you continue to make great decisions on how to mod it. That muffler looks bitch. Looks just like stock but with a bigger outlet. Can't wait to hear how it sounds.

I agree with Bryan! It has been awesome hearing and watching the progress of this car. It is so clean and the exhaust, wheels and drop flow so well with the car. Last thing I think you should get...TINT! I hope and plan on hearing this tomorrow

I think I'm going to go with full 2.5" ebay exhaust and header, then cut off the muffler and have someone reweld it. Then run my car again, but this time with weight reduction (last time I was full weight with lots of stuff in the car, I didn't even take the spare tire out), and I'm going to put the stock steelies on the front since they have a less wide tire and should weigh less.

Edit: Also, would a wider throttle body really help much with my current mods? (Just CAI and soon to be full exhaust)

I was too caught up "in the moment" to notice lol. There was a few chirps though off the launch, but I don't think I was spinning. I think I just suck at launching.

I wish I had video of it so I know what I did wrong. My MPH should be a little bit lower for the times that I ran, don't you think?

Well if I were you I wouldn't change wheels because these wheels and tires will let you hook up pretty good for the power you are pushing. No reason to change wheels to shave off a few pounds. What did you launch at?

Those 14" steelies probably weigh more than your 17" aluminum alloys. Don't be a ricer and try to make your car "faster". You'll never see 16s.

I launched at like 2300 the first time, I wasn't really concentrating that much because I was nervous. Second time, 2500 and the third time was 3000, but I think that was a little too high. I'm not sure. The third time I did a small burnout / launch to try and get all the water off my tires since there was VERY little room to get around the waterbox.

I took a right turn way too fast at a stop light after getting off the highway. Lost traction, hit the brakes and locked the wheels, slid right into the guard rail. Apparently there was a cop at the other end of the intersection. Got a Careless and Imprudent ticket for it.

The damage isn't that bad for what happened. It scared the shit out of me at first, as I thought my whole front bumper was toast. I sure did leave a mark on the guard rail though.

The cop was in the middle of the overpass, speedtrapping I-64. That is how he came up with the claim we were street racing. Apparently, driving 200 ft. behind you in the same lane doing the speed limit is street racing.

Tyler
08-10-2009, 08:53 PM
I disagree. That is still 40. When you get on the highway at the valley going towards the city, it still says you're getting on 40. 64 doesnt start until farther into town.

Wow I haven't posted in over a month. This will be my once-a-month post I guess.

I need to get rid of this car. It brings nothing but bad luck it seems. There's nothing new going on with it since I last updated. I'm thinking about just taking everything off, spending a day and fixing the problems it has then rocking it stock for awhile before I get rid of it. I'd probably make decent money selling the suspension and stuff, and when selling time comes, it would weed out all the retards that think it would be fast because it's lowered and has a shiney red intake. Sell it for what it's worth (not much) and be on my way. I need something better.
